THE TORONTO STAR

36 diabetic students will receive dream scholarship

Students with diabetes often face other challenges as well.

Nursing student Katie McKernan is one of a family of 10 who wants to specialize in emergency room nursing. Elizabeth Kagedan has overcome serious leg tumours and wants to become a journalist.

Larissa Robinson-Mudhar travels 140 kilometres to and from school each day to be in the drama program. And Sandra Sawa, 17, who moved to Toronto from Iraq, will be the first in her family to go to university.

They are among 36 students with diabetes from across Ontario to land a Diabetes Hope Foundation scholarship this week to help them pursue their dreams of higher education.

The Diabetes Hope Foundation provides help to students who have excelled at managing their diabetes as well as their studies and found time for sports and their community.
